Bush Honeysuckles loves full sun and you will have the very best foliage color by planting yours where it will get 6 or more hours of sun a day, however, it will also perform well in partially shady areas at the cost of some of those adorable flowers and the intensity of color. Cold-hardy native cultivars in USDA zones 3 through 7, these shrubs are not particular on soil type, any well-drained soil is fine! Low moisture requirements and adaptability mean these are easy-care and low-maintenance shrubs.
Every other year, add a top dressing of a three-inch layer of arborist mulch. You’ll keep the root system cool and moist. Mulch between plants also helps keep new mass plantings weed-free. Naturally shapely, you can easily keep them manicured with regular pruning in early spring to shape or shorten them. Or, let it do its thing for a more natural look. Should you need to prune, do so in the late winter or early spring, or the entire shrub can be cut down to the ground in early spring and will quickly re-grow from the roots.
